We all know that to see long-term progress, you need to be training consistently every week. But if you’re not clear on what you’re actually training for, the gym can quickly turn into a right fucking slog.

So, if your sessions are starting to feel like a chore, my advice is to get real with yourself about what you actually enjoy and what you want from your training. Do you want more muscle, more strength, maybe power or speed?

Once you’ve nailed down your goal, your training should be tailored to that, and having a clear sense of purpose will keep you motivated and stop your sessions from becoming a tedious drag.

Remember, “fun” means different things to different people, so don’t start comparing yourself to others. Just because someone loves pounding out miles on the treadmill or flogging themselves on the cross-trainer, doesn’t mean you have to do the same. The key is to focus on what works for you.

On top of that, one thing that’s really helped me enjoy my training more is chatting to people in the gym who are on the same wavelength.

The gym can feel pretty lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. If you see someone using the same kit as you, or someone who seems to be going after the same goals, take a chance and have a chat. You might find someone with similar goals, which can make all the difference.

Lastly, don’t forget your nutrition. Eating in line with your goals can massively boost both your motivation and enjoyment. There’s something pretty satisfying about knowing you’re fuelling your body properly while smashing your workouts.

Of course, getting the right balance between diet and training can be tricky. If you’re struggling to figure out what’s working and what’s not, don’t hesitate to reach out. I can help you sort a personalised nutrition plan to match your goals, so you’re not wasting time or effort.
